Sarayaku is located near the equator, therefore it is pitch dark throughout the year only 15 minutes after the onset of twilight, around 6.30 pm. Since artificial light is rare, people get up at the break of dawn at five o’ clock, and go to bed around eight at night. The solar panels installed in front of every house only provide enough electricity to operate one light bulb for a few hours.
