In summer 2007 the G8-Summit, the annual meeting of the heads of government of Italy, Canada, Japan, Germany, the USA, the UK and France, took place in Heiligendamm, a small German sea-side resort located at the Baltic Sea.

Alongside the summit, which dealed with subjects such as economic growth, climate change and world poverty, more than 80.000 protesters from all over Europe gathered to demand a change in the politics of the western industry nations towards a more just global future and a sustainable handling with natural resources.

To seal the summit participants off from the demonstrators, more than 16.000 policemen and women, as well as about 1.100 army soldiers were installed in the remote area. A 12 km long iron fence with barbed wire had been constructed to lock the summit area up completely. The police operation caused costs of more than 100 Million Euro and is considered the largest of ist kind ever taken place in Germany.
