The village government is elected democratically every second year by the general assembly, in which all inhabitants over the age of 18 take part. It consists of five Curakas (mayors) of the five sub-municipalities of Sarayaku, Dirigentes – the officers of the diverse village departments, such as the Department of Women, the Department of Water Supply or the Department of Public Relations, as well as the president. The elected council holds a weekly meeting, open to all those interested, every Friday afternoon at three o’clock, at which all issues related to the village are discussed and agreed upon in consensus.
